Fire Crews from multiple agencies responded to 23804 C16 Northwest of Le Mars on Sunday, April, 23rd about 5:45 p.m. for reports of a two-story farmhouse on fire.
Le Mars Fire Chief David Schipper says that the fire started as a result of a burn pile from the previous day rekindling and blowing to the home igniting some hay bales which caught fire to the breezeway then spread into the first and second level of the home and then into the attic.
He says the fire took about 30-35 minutes to get under control. Approximately 35-40 firefighters worked to put out the exterior fire and hotspots throughout the interior of the home and monitoring surrounding structures. Ireton, Le Mars, Akron, Sioux Center, Maurice and Hawarden Fire Departments all responded to ensure enough water and manpower were available due to the wind speed.
The homeowners were home and attempted to put it out but were not successful. There were no injuries reported and the home is thought to be a total loss.
