One of two injured in early February Central Apartments Fire dies death ruled homicide

A release from Sioux City Police on Wednesday says that 51-year-old Wanda Blake died on February 27th after spending weeks in the hospital and rehab as a result of her injuries from the fire.

On March 7th the Iowa State Medical Examiner in Ankeny ruled the death a homicide. Once complete the full report will be sent to the Woodbury County Attorney's Office for review of appropriate charges. Mahoney, arrested shortly after the fire remains in Woodbury County Jail being held on one-million dollar bond for 1st-degree arson.

At 1:52 am Sioux City Fire was called to 613 11th Street for reports of smoke coming from a window at Central Apartments in Sioux City Sunday Morning February 4th.

Firefighters found heavy black smoke throughout the first floor coming from Apartment 107 upon arrival. At least 23 people were in the building at the time of the fire. They were temporarily evacuated. Assistant Fire Chief said 3 people had been transported to the hospital with injuries and the building was temporarily evacuated while the fire was put out.

In a release from Sioux City Police Department, they say 2 people were found unconscious and transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, one was later transported to a burn center in Omaha.

In the course of the investigation, Police determined the fire was intentionally started and arrested 51-year-old Robert Paul Mahoney charged with 1st Degree Arson. He's being held in the Woodbury County Jail on $1,000,000 Bond.
