According to a press release from Sioux City Fire Rescue
At 7:36 p.m. Saturday, May 14, Sioux City Fire Rescue responded to a reported fuel release that was visible along the Missouri Riverfront. Investigation revealed that the release originated in the area of 5th and Water Streets and had flowed through the storm sewer system to the Missouri River via Perry Creek.
A Hazardous Materials response was initiated Saturday and crews deployed absorbent booms to contain as much of the product as possible. Cleanup efforts have concluded and all visible contaminants have been removed.
SCFR is seeking information from the public who may have witnessed anything in the vicinity of 5th and Water Streets on Saturday, May 14, prior to 7:00 PM. It is believed that a petroleum product either leaked or was poured into the storm sewer inlet in the parking lot located on the NE corner of 5th and Water. Please call Sioux City Fire Rescue at 712-279-6377 if you have information that may assist in the investigation.
It is illegal to dump any chemicals into the storm water sewer system or the sanitary sewer systems. If you have hazardous chemicals to dispose of, call the Household Hazardous Waste collection site at 712-255-8345
