Man arrested after tri state pursuit of stolen Mountaineer that ended in Sioux City

Just after 5:00 pm on Tuesday, July 24th South Dakota State Patrol attempted to stop a Red unplated Mercury mountaineer near North Sioux City South Dakota. The driver failed to stop and lead South Dakota State Patrol and North Sioux City Police on a pursuit Northbound on Interstate 29.

The pursuit then came Southbound on Interstate 29 and crossed into Iowa. Iowa State Patrol and Sioux City Police joined in the pursuit which reached speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour through a construction zone. The driver continued to elude officers and then went Westbound on 129 and crossed into Nebraska.

The driver exited into South Sioux City where Dakota County Deputies and South Sioux City Police joined in the pursuit and attempted to use stop sticks to stop the pursuit. The driver crisscrossed through South Sioux City streets and eventually took the Veterans Memorial Bridge back into Iowa where officers from Iowa State Patrol and Sioux City Police were waiting with stop sticks.

The stops sticks were successful and deflated the front tires, the driver continued on Wesley Parkway and then onto 3rd Street and then Pearl Street in front of the Hard Rock Parking lot where the driver then attempted to flee on foot but was taken into Custody about 30 minutes after the pursuit started. The vehicle he was driving, a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer was reported stolen, he was found in possession of approximately 1 gram of Marijuana, used needles and a bag with a white residue that tested positive for methamphetamine.

Christopher Keith Barse, 32 was arrested and charged with Felony Eluding, Theft 2nd, Reckless Driving, Speeding, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and is being held on a South Dakota Warrant.
