Officer Involved Shooting Interstate 29 near Beresford South Dakota

A South Dakota Highway Patrol Trooper fired their duty weapon during a traffic stop on Interstate 29 Mile Marker 45 just south of Beresford South Dakota in Union County about 9:50 pm Sunday Evening.

The trooper initiated a traffic stop with a vehicle, a 2007 Toyota Camry driven by Kuong Gatluak, 21 after spotting the vehicle as it had just been involved in a pursuit with Vermillion Police Department in which Vermillion terminated the pursuit due to the speeds in residential neighborhoods, Vermillion Police were attempting to stop the vehicle to do a welfare check on the driver.

A release from the South Dakota Attorney General says that during the traffic stop the situation escalated resulting in the trooper firing their weapon at Gatluak, who was transported to a hospital.

South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the incident and will issue a case report and shooting summation to be reviewed by the Attorney General for final determination on the troopers action. The release is expected within 30 days.
