Preliminary information released in South Sioux Officer involved shooting.

A release from the Dakota County Attorney says that preliminary investigation has been conducted and is being released as the community has an interest in knowing what happened.

Officer Brian Van Berkum was contacted by a person who adviced that a male was in possession of a firearm inside Los Amigos at 1313 Dakota Avenue. Officer Van Berkum requested backup from dispatch in locating a man with a gun.

A male, later identified as Luis A Quinoes Rosa was located matching the description of the armed man. When confronted he displayed a gun and opened fire on Officer Berkum, who was shot twice. Once in the abdomen and once in the leg. Officer Van Berkum returned fire and hit Rosa in the leg, severing his femoral artery.

Additional officers responded to the area to assist in locating Rosa, who was found in an automobile a short time later unresponsive in possession of a .357 magnum handgun, aid was rendered and Rosa was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead as a result of extensive blood loss.

A South Sioux City Police Officer responding to a call at Los Amigos just after 2:00 am Saturday Morning May 11th for a report of a man with a gun was shot.

Both the officer and the man were transported to the hospital with injuries. The incident remains under investigation and no other information is being released at this time.
