West Middle put on lockdown as a precaution temporarily Wednesday morning

A report from a concerned citizen about a suspicious person in the area of the 3000 block of Edmunds Avenue about 8:00 am caused officials to put West Middle School on lockdown until the suspect was captured.

Iowa Department of Corrections says that 28-year-old Nicholas James Smith left the Sioux City residential treatment facility Tuesday evening without permission. Smith is serving time after being convicted of 2nd Degree Robbery and other crimes.

The suspicious person reported at 8:00 am near West Middle once located by police ran from officers towards West Middle School before being captured about 8:15 am by Sioux City Police. Nicholas James Smith was arrested and booked into the Woodbury County Jail Wednesday Morning.
