A Chevrolet Silverado driving the wrong way on Interstate 29 struck an SUV between the 147B and 148 while traveling Southbound in the Northbound lane. After crashing into the SUV the vehicle continued with substantial damage to their vehicle, including a missing wheel before eventually being spotted by an off duty Sioux City Police Officer as it attempted to turn around while it smashed into the concrete barriers and headed Northbound without any lights on. The Officer relayed information about the vehicle to dispatch while attempting to control traffic.

The vehicle was then spotted by Woodbury County Deputy on the Gordon Drive Viaduct headed Eastbound while it was being followed by a citizen who called the vehicle into dispatch. The vehicle failed to stop for Deputies and Officers. The vehicle was forced to stop by a Sioux City Police Officer using their vehicle and the driver 32-year-old Nickolas Diediker was then taken into custody and transported to the Woodbury County Jail on charges of OWI, Eluding, Reckless Driving, Wrong Pay Driving, Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Accident, and no Headlights.

The roads were reopened a short time later. Another driver that went around an officer that had the road closed off was cited for failing to yield to an emergency vehicle. The driver of the SUV was transported to MercyOne with non-life-threatening injuries.
