After 21 years with the Sioux City Police Department, Captain Rex Mueller will take the top job as Chief of Sioux City Police beginning September 1st, 2017.

A release from the City of Sioux City says, Captain Mueller started his career with the department in 1996 and has worked in all 3 divisions in multiple positions. Patrol Officer, Community Action Support Team Officer, Traffic Accident Reconstructionist, Field Training Office, and Crime Stoppers Coordinator. In 2004 after 8 years on the force, Rex was promoted to Sergeant and worked on the Alcohol Safety Action Program and Crimes Against Persons Unit in the Investigations Services Bureau. In 2009 he was promoted to Lieutenant and served as Watch commander for the 2nd and 3rd watch, Commander for the Community Policing Program and supervised Records Section. Additionally, Mueller spent 18 years as a member of the SWAT team serving as an entry team member, team leader and as Team Commander for the past 8 years. In 2016 he was promoted to Captain and has served as the Commander of the Uniform Services Bureau.

In addition to his tenure with Sioux City Police, he obtained a Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Art for the University of South Dakota and is a Graduate from the Federal Bureau of Investigations National Academy for Law Enforcement. Red graduated from Bishop Heelan High School in Sioux City in 1990 and resides in Sioux City with his wife and son.

After the announcement of retiring Chief of Police Doug Young earlier this year, a nation-wide recruitment process was conducted with the assistance of city staff and community stakeholders during the interview process.
